The Rumour: “How much do the authorities pay for the person to return back to his country? We are in Chios and heard that they give money to people to be sent back.”
In Fact: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Greece (IOM) confirmed to News That Moves that a new reintegration package has been created in the Greek islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos.
If you are a third country national and you do not wish to or cannot stay legally in Greece but want to return to your country, you need to contact IOM.
The procedure and conditions are:
- You are eligible if you are non-vulnerable and will be registered in the project in Lesvos, Chios, Leros, Samos and Kos.
- You will receive an additional amount of 500 EUR (in cash) at the airport the day of your departure. This means that if you have been registered in the project in Chios, you will receive 500EUR as reintegration cash assistance plus 500EUR as one-time cash grant, in total 1,000 EUR.
- If you belong to a vulnerable group from the mentioned islands, you will not receive the reintegration assistance in cash, but you will get other help and services up to a value of 1,500 EUR. For example: to establish a small business, receive vocational training, cover temporary housing costs, be provided with medical and / or psychosocial support, etc).
IOM say that countries in a war zone such as Syria, Yemen and Palestine, currently are definitely not included among countries of voluntary return, due to safety reasons.
This list is updated according to the security conditions of each country.
