The EU-Turkey deal was agreed on March 18th, 2016.
The main points of the deal are:
- Returns to Turkey: All new irregular migrants or asylum seekers whose applications have been declared inadmissible crossing from Turkey to the Greek islands as of 20 March 2016 will be returned to Turkey;
- One-to-one scheme for resettlement: For every Syrian being returned to Turkey from the Greek islands, another Syrian will be resettled to the EU from Turkey.
However, the implementation of the deal has been slow:
- Returns to Turkey: as of the 10th of March 2017, around 900 people had been returned from the Greek islands to Turkey, including fewer than 200 Syrians;
- One-to-one scheme for resettlement: only 3,792 Syrians have been directly resettled to EU countries from Turkey. A big share was relocated to Germany (1,400).
