On March 18th, 2016, EU and Turkish leader agreed on the so-called EU-Turkey deal, aimed at stopping irregular migration from Turkey to the EU.
Following the EU-Turkey deal, the number of arrivals and deaths during sea crossings from Turkey to Greece dramatically decreased.
Between January and March 2016, more than 150,000 migrants and refugees arrived in Greece.
Between April and December 2016, only 22,000 people crossed from Turkey to Greece.
Between January and the 12th of March 2017, only 2,800 people arrived in Greece from Turkey by sea.
